Tetra Whisper IQ 130 GPH Aquarium Power Filter — for 20 gal, Quiet Self-Priming with Bio‑Scrubber

The Tetra Whisper IQ 130 GPH Power Filter is a quiet, self-priming filter for aquariums up to 20 gallons that combines mechanical, chemical, and biological media with Stay Clean technology.

Designed for hobbyists who want dependable, low-noise filtration, the Whisper IQ 130 GPH (model for 20-gallon tanks) pairs a submerged, self-priming motor with a bio-scrubber and Smart Path spillway to keep aquarium water clear and well-oxygenated. The unit is compatible with Tetra Whisper Bio-Bag filter cartridges (large size) for simple cartridge swaps and color-coded replacement options. Its sound-shield design reduces operational noise while the Stay Clean system helps limit buildup on glass and stabilize water conditions for easier maintenance.

How does the Whisper IQ keep water clear without constant tinkering?

The filter uses layered filtration: mechanical media traps debris, chemical media binds impurities, and the bio-scrubber cultivates beneficial aerobic bacteria that process ammonia and nitrite. The Smart Path spillway also increases surface agitation to improve oxygen exchange which supports biological filtration.

• Mechanical trapping with replaceable Bio-Bag cartridges for debris removal.
• Chemical media in cartridges helps bind small particles and stabilize pH.
• Bio-scrubber supports colonies of beneficial bacteria for biological filtration.
• Smart Path spillway oxygenates water to aid aerobic bacteria activity.

How quiet and reliable is the Whisper IQ during daily operation?

Whisper IQ includes a soft sound barrier between the motor and filter housing that reduces vibration and lowers noise to under 40 dB in typical conditions. The submerged, self-priming motor starts without manual priming and is engineered for continuous use, minimizing interruptions to the aquarium environment.

• Sound-shielded design reduces motor and flow noise for quiet rooms.
• Submerged, self-priming motor eliminates the need to prime before startup.
• Continuous-flow construction built for steady daily performance.

What maintenance does this filter need and what consumables are required?

Maintenance is straightforward: swap the Bio-Bag filter cartridge monthly or as needed and rinse any accumulated debris from the intake and housing. The filter uses large-sized Tetra Whisper Bio-Bag cartridges (blue packaging); cartridges are sold separately and are color-coded for quick size recognition.

• Monthly cartridge replacement recommended for optimal performance.
• Rinse intake and housing parts during cartridge swaps to prevent buildup.
• Use large Tetra Whisper Bio-Bag cartridges (blue) for this 20-gallon model.

Will the Whisper IQ fit different tank setups and water types?

The Tetra Whisper IQ works in both freshwater and marine aquariums and offers an adjustable intake to suit a variety of tank heights and configurations. Its compact design mounts easily on standard tanks and the self-priming motor handles typical aquarium arrangements without special plumbing.

• Adjustable intake to accommodate different tank depths and layouts.
• Suitable for freshwater and marine aquaria up to 20 gallons (130 GPH).
• Compact hang-on-back design fits most standard tanks without extra hardware.

Who this is for: The Tetra Whisper IQ 130 GPH Power Filter is a good choice for new and experienced hobbyists who keep small to medium aquariums up to 20 gallons and want a low-noise, easy-to-maintain filtration system. It's suited to owners who prefer simple cartridge swaps, reliable biological filtration, and a compact hang-on-back footprint that works with freshwater or marine setups.
