Rust-Oleum Stops Rust Spray Paint — Semi-Gloss Black, Oil-Based Rust-Preventive with Any-Angle Spray

Rust-Oleum Stops Rust Semi-Gloss Black spray paint is an oil-based protective enamel that prevents rust and provides a durable semi-gloss finish for interior and exterior surfaces.

This aerosol paint blends rust-preventive chemistry with an easy-to-use spray format so you can restore, protect or refresh metal, wood, masonry and more. The formula resists weathering, abrasion and fading while drying to the touch in a few hours. Any-angle spray technology and a comfort tip make it practical for overhead, tight or awkward spots—helpful for both DIYers and professionals tackling maintenance, touch-ups or creative projects.

How does this paint protect surfaces outdoors?

The oil-based enamel creates a tough film that sheds moisture and stands up to temperature changes and abrasion. It’s specifically formulated to help slow the formation of rust on ferrous metals when applied properly and maintained. Use on prepared, clean surfaces for best long-term protection.

• Weather- and corrosion-resistant formula for exterior use
• Resists chipping, fading and abrasion to maintain appearance
• Oil-based enamel bonds well to metal, wood, concrete and masonry
• Apply to cleaned, de-rusted and primed metal for optimal results

Can I spray in tight spaces or upside down?

Yes—the can features any-angle spray technology so it delivers an even spray pattern even when held upside down or at awkward angles. The comfort tip reduces finger fatigue for longer jobs and improves control for consistent coverage on small parts and hard-to-reach areas.

• Any-angle valve sprays from multiple orientations
• Comfort tip with wider pad for better ergonomics
• Sprays evenly for touch-ups, railings, furniture and odd angles

What finish and drying time should I expect?

The product dries to the touch in about 2–4 hours under normal conditions and delivers a semi-gloss sheen that gives surfaces a subtle, low-luster shine. Coverage and dry time vary with temperature, humidity and film thickness; follow label guidance for recoat windows to build a durable film.

• Semi-gloss finish for a clean, low-luster look
• Touch dry typically in 2–4 hours; full cure longer depending on conditions
• Covers roughly 15 sq. ft. per can under ideal application

How should I prepare and apply for best results?

Surface prep is critical: remove loose rust, dirt and grease, and use a primer on bare metal if needed. Shake the can thoroughly, maintain recommended spray distance, and apply several light coats rather than one heavy coat to avoid runs and ensure even coverage.

• Clean and de-rust surfaces; sand glossy areas for adhesion
• Shake can vigorously before use and between coats
• Hold can 10–16 inches from surface and apply thin, even coats
• Allow recommended dry time between coats for durability
