Pennington Kentucky 31 Tall Fescue Grass Seed, 7 lb — Drought-Resistant Durable Cool-Season Turf

Pennington Kentucky 31 Tall Fescue is a durable, drought-tolerant cool-season grass seed formulated to establish low-maintenance lawns and repair bare spots quickly.

Originally developed as a workhorse turf variety, Kentucky 31 tall fescue delivers thick, coarse blades that tolerate heat, intermittent drought, and regular foot traffic. This 7 lb bag from Pennington gives homeowners an economical option for overseeding, patching, or starting new lawns in areas that receive roughly 4 to 8 hours of sun. Pennington sources seed directly from partner growers, helping ensure consistent quality from field to yard.

How fast will I see green after planting?

Expect germination in roughly 8 to 21 days under favorable soil and temperature conditions. Seed-to-sprout timing depends on soil warmth, moisture, and seed-to-soil contact.

• Optimal planting windows: early spring or early fall
• Keep soil consistently moist until seedlings reach one to two inches
• Full establishment takes several weeks longer with proper care

How much area does a 7 lb bag cover and how should I use it?

The coverage depends on whether you are overseeding an existing lawn or starting from bare soil. Use recommended seeding rates to reach thick, even turf.

• Overseeding existing lawn: covers up to about 4,000 sq ft
• New lawn from scratch: covers approximately 1,660 sq ft
• Apply with a spreader or by hand, then lightly rake and keep moist

Will it hold up to heat, drought, and regular use?

Kentucky 31 tall fescue is known for coarse, deep-rooting blades that resist short dry spells and recover well from wear. It’s not a fine-bladed ornamental turf but performs reliably where durability matters.

• Drought-resistant variety that tolerates intermittent dry periods
• Good traffic resilience for play areas and pathways
• Requires less frequent watering once established compared with many fine fescues

How should I plant and maintain this seed for best results?

Simple preparation and routine care speed establishment and improve long-term performance. Follow seeding rates and basic lawn-care steps tailored to cool-season grasses.

• Prepare a firm, level seedbed and remove debris; loosen topsoil slightly
• Spread seed evenly, press seed into soil, and water regularly until established
• Mow at a recommended height for tall fescue and fertilize in spring and fall

Who is this for? Pennington Kentucky 31 Tall Fescue 7 lb is ideal for homeowners and property managers who want an affordable, low-maintenance cool-season turf that stands up to sun, traffic, and occasional dry spells. Choose this seed when you need reliable coverage for overseeding older lawns, patching high-wear areas, or establishing a practical, resilient yard in climates suited to tall fescue.
