Pecking Order Nest Box Pads for Chickens — 13 x 13 aspen excelsior liners, 10-pack, compostable & moisture-wicking

Pecking Order Nest Box Pads are 13 x 13 aspen excelsior liners that sit inside chicken nest boxes to keep eggs cleaner, drier, and easier to collect.

These disposable nest pads are constructed from Great Lakes aspen excelsior fibers bonded to a kraft paper backing and manufactured in the USA. The loose, fibrous excelsior channels moisture and droppings downward away from the laying area so eggs stay on top of the pad instead of getting buried. Sized at 13" x 13", each pad conforms to most standard nest boxes and the 10-pack lets you swap fresh liners quickly for simpler cleaning and better nest hygiene.

How do these pads keep eggs cleaner and easier to gather?

The aspen excelsior fibers create a raised, airy surface that allows waste and moisture to sink below the egg level. That prevents eggs from being buried in loose bedding and reduces direct contact with droppings, making collection quicker and reducing manual cleaning time.

• Excelsior fibers channel moisture downward away from eggs.
• Raised texture keeps eggs visible and accessible.
• Kraft paper backing provides a stable base that stays in place.

Are these nest pads easy to use and replace?

Yes — the 13" x 13" size fits most nest boxes and can be shaped or scrunched to match irregular interiors. Replacing a soiled pad takes seconds, which makes routine nest maintenance faster than raking or sifting loose shavings.

• Pre-cut 13" x 13" size fits common nesting boxes.
• Lightweight pads can be removed and replaced in seconds.
• Hand-packed inspection ensures consistent thickness and backing adhesion.

What makes aspen excelsior a good choice compared to straw, shavings, or sand?

Aspen excelsior is an open, fibrous material that encourages airflow and drainage, so nests dry out faster and ammonia buildup is reduced. Unlike straw or pine shavings, excelsior holds eggs on top while directing moisture and droppings beneath the surface.

• Sustainably sourced aspen through SFI-member suppliers.
• Better airflow and drier nesting environment than dense bedding.
• Less egg burying versus loose shavings or straw.

How long will a single pad last and how should I dispose of them?

Longevity depends on flock size, frequency of use, and hen behavior; many keepers replace pads with each egg season change or whenever soiled. The pads are made from natural wood fibers and kraft paper backing, so they’re suitable for composting or routine waste disposal when replaced.

• Replace when visibly soiled or when odor appears.
• Compostable in most backyard systems; check local guidelines.
• Sold in a 10-pack to keep a ready supply on hand.
