LEGO Technic NASA Artemis Space Launch System Rocket 632-piece model — 70 cm tall, 3-stage hand-crank

The LEGO Technic NASA Artemis Space Launch System Rocket (42221) is a 632-piece STEM building model that demonstrates realistic three-stage separation and includes four astronaut nanofigures for display and play.

This detailed LEGO Technic set, developed with input from NASA and ESA, recreates the Artemis launch system that will carry Orion toward lunar orbit. The model blends educational engineering features with hands-on play: a manual hand crank triggers staged separations, while blue flame elements and an info panel create an engaging display piece. At 70 cm (27.5 in) tall when mounted on the provided stand, it’s a striking room centerpiece that also teaches basic rocket mechanics and sequencing.

How does the model show the rocket's three-stage separation?

Turning the hand crank sets a sequence of mechanical events in motion so each stage detaches in order, illustrating real launch staging. The solid rocket boosters separate first, followed by the core stage, then the upper stage drops away with the Orion module and launch abort tower.

• Hand-crank driven separation mechanism for visible staging.
• Distinct connectors and release points for each stage.
• Upper-stage assembly includes engine module, Orion and abort system.
• Blue flame pieces simulate engine ignition during demonstrations.

What educational value does this LEGO Technic rocket offer?

This set introduces fundamentals of mechanical engineering, sequencing and aerospace terminology through build and play. It encourages problem-solving as builders follow multi-step instructions and observe cause-and-effect in the moving mechanisms.

• Realistic mechanical functions that teach basic engineering concepts.
• Collaboration with NASA and ESA means authentic reference to the Artemis system.
• Build instructions and 3D tools in the LEGO Builder app support independent learning.
• Includes astronaut nanofigures for contextual role-play and storytelling.

What comes in the box and how big is the finished model?

The set includes 632 pieces, an information display panel and four astronaut nanofigures to stage missions and dioramas. When assembled and mounted, the rocket reaches about 70 cm (27.5 in) in height with a slender footprint suitable for a shelf or display stand.

• 632 authentic LEGO Technic elements for realistic mechanisms.
• Four astronaut nanofigures to inspire imaginative play.
• Information panel for display and quick facts.
• Finished dimensions: approx. 70 cm high, 16 cm long, 8 cm wide on the stand.

Is this set suitable for solo builders and what support is available?

Yes — the set is aimed at ages 9+ and balances challenge with accessibility, using Technic parts and clear step-by-step guidance. The LEGO Builder app offers zoomable, rotatable 3D instructions to help builders visualize each step and track progress.

• Recommended age 9+ with kid-friendly instruction pacing.
• Digital 3D building tools in the LEGO Builder app for guidance.
• Durable Technic construction for repeated demonstrations and play.
• Open-ended play potential using the included nanofigures and panel.
