How do I set up and program user codes on the SmartCode 917?

Programming is done through the touchscreen keypad and allows creation of individualized access codes for family, guests, or service providers. You can add, delete, or change codes without removing the lock and the process is designed for homeowner-level setup.

• Create up to 30 separate user codes stored on the lock.
• Optional one-time codes useful for short-term access.
• On-screen prompts guide code creation and deletion.
• Requires initial master code setup before adding users.

What locking modes are available and when should I use each?

The SmartCode 917 provides three distinct modes so you can adapt the lock to daily life, rentals, or management needs. Modes are selectable on the device to automatically change how the lever and keypad behave.

• Auto Lock: Locks automatically after each entry or exit for convenience and consistent security.
• Passage Mode: Keeps the lever unlocked so no code or key is required—handy for extended open access periods.
• Disable Passage: Forces use of a code or key every time; ideal for rental units or property management.

How does SmartKey Security and re-keying work?

SmartKey Security is built into the cylinder to resist common break-in methods and lets you re-key the lock quickly without removing it. Re-keying allows you to match the new lever to existing keys at your home in seconds.

• Owner-rekeyable in seconds using the included SmartKey tool and instructions.
• Designed to defend against lock picking, bumping, and other forced-entry techniques.
• Compatible with Kwikset SmartKey other locks for key consolidation.

What are the power, fit, and certification details I should know?

The lock runs on a single 9V battery (included) with expected battery life up to three years depending on usage. The Halifax lever is reversible for left- or right-hand doors and the latch and strike match common residential preparations.

• Includes 6AL latch and RCS strike for standard door installations.
• Operates on a 9V battery; up to three years of typical battery life.
• Reversible handing fits both left- and right-swing doors without modification.
• BHMA AAA certified for residential security, durability, and finish.
