Jacquard Cyanotype Sensitizer Set is a ready-to-mix kit that creates the traditional Prussian-blue sensitizer for sun-exposed photographic blueprints on paper and natural fabrics.
This kit recreates the 19th-century cyanotype process in a modern, user-friendly format. It contains premeasured chemical components that mix to form a light-sensitive solution, letting you produce high-contrast, archival-looking blue prints using sunlight or a UV source. The technique works with objects for photograms or with inkjet-printed negatives on transparency film to capture photographic detail on both paper and fabric.
Mix the two components to form the working sensitizer, coat your chosen substrate, allow it to dry in the dark, then arrange objects or a transparency and expose to sunlight or a UV lamp. After exposure, rinse the image in water to develop and stop the reaction, revealing deep Prussian blue tones.
Natural-fiber papers and untreated fabrics accept the sensitizer best and produce the cleanest detail. Paper typically yields sharper edges and finer tonal gradation, while fabric gives a softer, more textured appearance that absorbs and displays deep blue differently.
The Jacquard kit arrives with premeasured chemicals and clear instructions to minimize guesswork. While the process is straightforward and forgiving—ideal for workshops and classrooms—basic safety precautions like gloves and eye protection are recommended when handling concentrates.
Cyanotype supports diverse creative workflows: place natural objects for photograms, use digital negatives for photographic fidelity, or experiment with layered exposures and hand-coloring after development. Post-wash treatments like toning or applying fabric mediums expand the palette and permanence.
Who is this for: Artists, photographers, printmakers, quilters, teachers, and hobbyists who want a hands-on, low-cost method for producing striking blue prints will find this kit especially useful. It's designed for beginners learning historic photographic techniques as well as experienced makers who want dependable, archival-looking cyanotypes at scale. The included quantities and clear procedures make it a practical choice for individual projects or classroom kits.
Q: How much sensitizer does the kit make?
A: The kit mixes to 16 oz of working sensitizer—8 oz of each component—enough for about sixty-five 8×10 paper prints.
Q: Can I use this on fabric?
A: Yes, it works best on natural fibers and will produce roughly fifty 8×10 fabric prints with rich blue tones.
