Gaiam Thick Yoga Mat 10mm Extra-Cushioned, 72 x 24 in Purple with Adjustable Cinch Strap

The Gaiam Essentials Thick Yoga Mat is a 10mm extra-cushioned exercise mat designed to protect knees and joints during yoga, Pilates, and floor workouts while rolling up easily for transport.

If you want a go-to mat for low-impact movement, recovery sessions, or home workouts on hard floors, this Gaiam Essentials mat balances plush comfort with lightweight portability. Built from dense NBR foam, it delivers soft support that reduces pressure on contact points and includes an adjustable cinch strap so you can take it to class or store it neatly between uses.

How does the thicker 10mm foam change my practice?

The 10mm (2/5") high-density foam adds a substantial layer of cushioning compared with standard thin mats, offering more protection for joints during kneeling and seated poses. It prioritizes shock absorption and comfort, making it especially useful for restorative flows, Pilates, and gentle stretching routines.

• 10mm thickness reduces felt pressure on knees, hips, and tailbone.
• High-density NBR foam maintains shape while giving soft support.
• Better for long holds, recovery exercises, and low-impact work.

Will it slip on hard floors and how do I care for it?

The textured foam surface is designed to limit sliding during dry workouts on wood, tile, or concrete. It’s not a tacky, studio-style mat for sweaty hot yoga, but it provides controlled footing for most at-home routines and is simple to keep fresh.

• Textured surface reduces slipping in everyday, dry conditions.
• Wipe clean with a damp cloth; air out 24–48 hours to dissipate initial foam smell.
• Not recommended for heavy sweat classes without additional towel or grip layer.

How portable is it for commuting to class or storage?

Despite its plush feel, the mat stays lightweight (about 3.11 lbs) and rolls easily for compact storage. An included adjustable cinch strap keeps the mat secured for carrying between rooms or to a local studio.

• 72" x 24" size fits most users and exercise styles.
• Rolls up quickly and secures with the adjustable strap for transport.
• Lightweight enough to toss over a shoulder without extra bulk.

Is this mat suitable for all exercise types and bodyweights?

This mat is best for low- to moderate-intensity workouts where cushioning is a priority: yoga, Pilates, stretching, physical therapy, and general bodyweight routines. It performs well on hard surfaces but prioritizes softness over the firm stability some advanced practices require.

• Ideal for beginners, those needing joint support, and recovery use.
• Works for regular home use on wood, tile, and concrete floors.
• Not intended as a dense performance mat for high-impact plyometrics.

Who is this for: The Gaiam Essentials Thick Yoga Mat is aimed at people who want maximum underfoot comfort without sacrificing portability — beginners, anyone rehabbing or protecting sensitive joints, home exercisers on hard floors, and those who prefer a softer, more forgiving mat for restorative or low-impact sessions. If you need a firmer, ultra-grippy surface for heated or advanced practices, consider pairing this mat with a non-slip towel or choosing a performance-oriented option instead.
