CATAN 5-6 Player Expansion (6th Edition) — Adds two players with extra frames, hexes & matched 6th Edition components

Expand your CATAN 6th Edition base game to welcome two extra players with the official CATAN 5-6 Player Expansion (6th Edition).

Bring more friends and family to the island: this add-on adds the extra frames, terrain hexes, resource and development cards, and two full wooden piece sets needed to increase the player count from up to four to as many as six. Designed to match the look and components of the CATAN 6th Edition base set, this expansion preserves balance while enlarging the map and intensifying trading, settlement-building, and negotiation.

How does the 5-6 Player Expansion change gameplay dynamics?

Adding two players alters interaction and pacing: there are more settlements and roads on the board, resource scarcity becomes more pronounced, and trades and alliances matter more. Turns can take a bit longer, but the social negotiation and strategic depth increase substantially.

• Larger island layout with extra frame pieces to fit more terrain hexes.
• More competition for key resources like ore and wheat during midgame.
• Increased trading opportunities and multiplayer bargaining scenarios.

What components are included and what do I still need?

This is an official expansion pack that supplies the pieces required to support two additional players but does not include everything to play on its own. You must own the CATAN 6th Edition base game—this expansion is designed to integrate visually and mechanically with that edition.

• Includes 28 terrain hexes, 25 resource cards, 9 development cards, and two full wooden player sets (brown and green).
• Contains extra frame pieces to enlarge the existing board layout for balanced play.
• Does not include dice, robber token, or base-game-specific pieces—these come from the 6th Edition base game.

Is setup and learning curve different with more players?

Setup follows the same steps as the base game with additional frame and hex placement to expand the island; the rule changes are minimal and clearly documented. New players familiar with CATAN will adapt quickly, while veterans will notice strategic nuances from the added player interactions.

• Follow base game setup, then attach expansion frame pieces to extend the island.
• Distribute the extra resource and development cards and the two new wooden color sets.
• Expect slightly longer turns and more negotiation; no new rulebook needed beyond expansion notes.

Who is this for? The CATAN 5-6 Player Expansion (6th Edition) is ideal for CATAN owners who routinely have more than four players—families, friend groups, and game-night hosts who want everyone involved. If you own the CATAN 6th Edition base game and want to make your sessions more social, competitive, and variable, this expansion is the official, component-matching way to scale up. It’s not for first-time players who do not yet own the base game, nor is it a standalone product; plan to use it alongside your 6th Edition set for the best experience.
