Blue Marble National Geographic Gross Science Kit for Kids 8–12 — 45 Experiments, 15 Full Kits + 30 Bonus Activities, STEM Hands‑O

The National Geographic Gross Science Kit from Blue Marble is a hands-on STEM kit with 45 slimey, gooey and glowing experiments designed to make science messy, memorable, and fun for kids ages 8–12.

Designed in collaboration with National Geographic and sold exclusively by Blue Marble on Amazon, this kit blends curiosity-driven thrills with clear, illustrated instructions so children can explore concepts like polymers, chemical reactions, and pH without extra materials. The box contains supplies for 15 guided ‘‘super gross’’ experiments plus a bonus booklet that outlines 30 additional activities using common household items, making it a compact, science-rich set for classrooms, playdates, or solo discovery time.

What kinds of experiments are included and how gross are they?

The kit centers on hands-on, themed experiments that mimic things kids find delightfully disgusting: boiling boogers, glowing worms, fizzy test-tube ‘‘vomit,’’ and other sensory projects. Each main experiment includes all specialty components you’ll need; the bonus booklet expands options using pantry staples. Experiments are playful but designed to teach real scientific principles in a memorable way.

• 15 fully supplied, themed experiments included in the main kit
• 30 bonus experiments using household items (described in the booklet)
• Topics covered: polymers, acid–base reactions, luminescence, viscosity changes
• Kid-friendly, illustrated step-by-step instructions

How easy is setup and are the instructions suitable for ages 8–12?

Setup is minimal: most specialty materials, test tubes, and tools are provided, and the instruction guide uses simple language and pictures so children can follow along independently or with light adult supervision. Safety notes and materials lists are included for each experiment so parents know when to step in.

• Illustrated, age-appropriate guides for each experiment
• Clear materials and safety callouts per activity
• Many experiments work as independent projects or small-group activities
• Bonus booklet details household-only alternatives for easy repeat play

What scientific learning does the kit promote?

While kids are having fun with gross-themed outcomes, the activities introduce foundational STEM ideas such as how polymers form, what causes chemical reactions, and how pH affects color and behavior of substances. Each experiment pairs a tactile result with a short explanation so curiosity becomes comprehension.

• Polymer science demonstrated through slimey and stretchy materials
• Observable chemical reactions: fizzing, color change, and gas release
• Simple experiments that show luminescence and pH indicators in action
• Discussion prompts and facts to extend learning beyond the experiment

What comes in the box and is this an award-winning product?

The kit ships with specialty supplies needed for the 15 headline experiments, assorted tools and containers, and a bonus booklet with 30 additional at-home experiments. Blue Marble is an award-winning toy maker (Toy of the Year winner) and provides U.S.-based support, and this edition is an Amazon-exclusive collaboration with National Geographic.

• Supplies for 15 primary experiments included in the kit
• Bonus booklet with 30 more experiments using household items
• Tools, test tubes, and specialty components packaged for child use
• Amazon exclusive — developed by Blue Marble in partnership with National Geographic

Who is this for? This set is ideal for curious kids ages 8–12 who love gross-out themes and hands-on learning, parents and teachers seeking an engaging STEM resource, or gift-givers who want an educational present that sparks conversation and experimentation. It works well for single explorers, small groups, and classroom demonstrations where visual, tactile experiments help make scientific ideas stick.
